So Janet was experiencing new perspectives resulting from meditation practice, but more than that, she was getting some explanations that she sorely needed about life.
When Janet and I met, we were a lot alike… yet so different. She was twenty-six, I was thirty-six, both born under the sign of the crab, both growing up in Cleveland, and both having a Catholic background. But she was the youngest of five children, I was an only child; and while I attended Catholic school for a year or two, she spent twelve years under the nuns’ thumbs!

What’s happening?” What have you been up to?” What’s going on in your life?” We use these types of greetings every day in lives filled with things to do.
Any break in these nonstop activities is uncomfortable; when someone asks what is going on in our lives, it’s not cool to say “Nothing.” We would be considered boring—not at all fun to be around. Therefore, we spice it up; TV, the internet, movies, going here and there, relationships, family, friends, religion, careers, hobbies; they all contribute to make our lives interesting and active. , “The Ascent of Mount Carmel,” indicates that God tears down the old body of one who seeks union with God, so that a new temple appropriate to receive God will grow).
Janet and I had just spent two years living by ourselves in a remote area of Pennsylvania. It was 1983, and I was tending oil wells on the property, cutting wood for our woodstove, and chasing black bears away from our trailer, while Janet planted a large garden, cooked soybeans in a pressure cooker, and made lots of yummy homemade bread!

Recently I had the privilege of interviewing Katy Bowes. Kathy is the founder of a program to help people stop overeating and to live better lives.
KM: There are so many dieting programs out there, what makes yours different?
KB: There are a gazillion “dieting” programs out there—aren’t there? It’s amazing.
And I’m saddened by those that are not really helping their clients. Many even set them up for failure.
Last week I was talking with one of the participants in my newest class—who has been really struggling to stay on a very popular diet program that supplies refined foods to their clients. This beautiful woman is binging, periodically, and feeling awful about her inability to stay on it.
