Obsessive-compulsive Disorder - Ocd And Religious Rituals

Believe it or not a lot of people who have OCD actually have a type related to religion.

The reason is because religion sometimes is very superstitious and the claims some religions make are ludicrous and are so close to OCD. Like praying the rosary and other things, in fear that if you don’t, you won’t be forgiven of your sins. No one can forgive your sins and Mary, the mother of Jesus cannot forgive your sins, Only God your father who is in Heaven can forgive you. So pray to Him secretly and ask Him for forgiveness, not man.

When someone develops OCD in the church, it’s usually at a young age. I remember when I was little and I had a fear that if I didn’t do certain things that I was going to go to hell and I was to the point of major anxiety with these thing. I have had OCD my whole life and since becoming free from it. I have learned to dismiss things and challenge my mind’s beliefs.

Part of getting over religious compulsions is to challenge the beliefs behind them. Go to the Bible and you will find that a lot of the church’s rituals have no real Biblical basis, therefore are useless and can actually foster an OCD attitude in people or make them more prone to developing OCD.

Take action: When you go to church, don’t believe everything that is told you. Make sure that it can be backed up by more than once scripture verse in the Bible. Do not do rituals to the point of where you are afraid that if you don’t you won’t go to Heaven, nothing could be farther from the truth. The only thing that you have to do to go to Heaven is to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and you will be saved. Then take up your cross and follow Him!
